          I'm just really sick of having blackness defined for me by white and black people alike. No matter where I go, no matter what I say, no matter the social circles I run in I will always be read as black because I'm a fucking 6'5" dude with dark skin and curly black hair

        I have apparently not "embraced" my "blackness" because of my hobbies, or the way I talk, or the way I do my hair, or the way I dress. Somehow loving my family and loving the African traditions I grew up with isn't blackness because I'm not performing some expectation or another

      I guess if I dropped the anime analysis for essays about Childish Gambino would I be New Black? Was I not black before when I get harassed on public transport by the police? Or when people call me "articulate" for stringing basic sentences together?

    Blackness is a construct that is applied to people by white supremacy to justify its inequalities. It's not something you can prove mathematically or get out of by acting a certain way. What you can do is choose what you're going to do with that label

      Maybe you identify with the culture that people struggling with this label over the past 300 years have produced. Maybe you don't. Maybe being black means something that only makes sense to you. Maybe it just means you refuse to hate yourself. But only you get to decide
