Thinking about BreadTube, I guess, given the recent DiScoUrsE, and falling out of love with it. Sometimes I use Twitter as a diary and this is one of those times sorry I don't make the rules
-
I'd discovered Contra, Lindsey, Hbomb, and Olly before I knew "BreadTube" was a thing. When I did it was pretty great for me because if there was a single community out there that enjoys super detailed left-wing anime analysis it would be BreadTube, right?
-
Up until then I think I was convinced I was the only leftist on the Internet??? Lol now that I'm neck deep in this bullshit that was obviously a lie. But statistically our corner of the Internet is hard to find. If you read my super early stuff I definitely WROTE like I was alone
-
And then suddenly it was like "oh neat there are other leftists" and that was really liberating because instead of pitching my ideas to right-wingers I knew would just harass or ignore me I could pitch my ideas to other leftists

Alas, BreadTube is a community centered around passively consuming and financially supporting expensive, vaguely progressive, and (most importantly) non-challenging YouTube content. That's it. Every problem with BreadTube we've been seeing stems from this fundamental fact.
-
The fact that it's impossible for new content creators to get started without being compared to Hbomb/Olly/Contra/Lindsey? The cringe takes on black nationalism? The rise in reactionary anti-idpol sentiment? The inability to turn viewership into offline praxis? Yup all that
-
Idk BreadTube is mainly a community of people who swapped their Ben Shapiro YouTube addiction with a Contrapoints addiction. Or their Destiny Twitch addiction with a Vaush one. Everything falls around that. Stuff is only successful if you can fill that "need"

The audience wants entertainment, not information or action. And as such it doesn't want to be challenged. You know what's entertaining? Having a fascist step into the arena of LOGIC and IDEAS to get utterly demolished. Wow sure feels great that I'm on the good side now, huh?
-
You know what's not entertaining? Being a dude and realizing you're part of the problem. Being white and realizing you're part of the problem. Being cis/het and realizing you're part of the problem. Living in the West and realizing you're part of the problem.
-
Oh but it's only from that second thing that we can actually hope to fix how shit the world is, huh? Damn. Funny how that works
-
So what about me? Do I challenge my audience enough? Do I challenge myself enough? I don't really know. But I want to. I won't get it right on the first try but that's the ideal. That, and memes
