For some reason I've seen a lot of reactionaries and the like say something to the effect of "lefties don't care about art, they just care about if they agree with the message". So I wanted to unpack this
-
First of all. Obviously reactionaries do the same thing. They're of course not tolerant of "leftist" art (basically, any art that features non cishet white men). They've just deluded themselves into thinking that not liking these things is "apolitical" when it's not
-
But hypocrisy, however funny, isn't what I want to talk about rn. I wanna challenge this whole idea that the message and themes of a work can't factor into it's quality
-
I'm perfectly comfortable saying every film and statue the Nazis made was "bad art". Not because they were made without craftsmanship, but because, if the art achieved its goal, I would be dead
-
Of course, art with bad messages can be enjoyable in other ways. I'm only saying that the message is allowed to be one factor of many that determine if a piece of art gets a thumbs up or down
-
Reactionaries have themselves in a logical bind where they're only allowed to engage with art on a superficial level. In an effort to remain "objective" they miss why art even matters in the first place.
-
A world where every anime can be boiled down to Plot logic 5/10 Characters 8/10 Art style 3/10 Fight scenes 6/10 Total 5.5/10 Is not one I want to live in
-
But it's the one reactionaries are forced to make. Otherwise their ideas could and would be challenged
