              1. So what a story says it's about and what a story a story ends up being about in effect don't always line up. And I think this phenomenon is especially true with Re:Zero. @garfielgrice/1291702988105539586

Re:Zero asserts, for example, it's a show about Subaru overcoming his own flaws to be a better person, and this is why Emilia ends up accepting him blah blah blah. But is this true to the events that actually take place?

So in episodes 12 and 13, Subaru's big mistake is that he goes behind Emilia's back, against her wishes, to try and insert himself into her life as the hero. He gets his ass kicked for it, he embarrasses her, and she leaves him. So how does Subaru solve this problem?

He spends the REST OF THE SEASON going behind Emilia's back, against her wishes, to try and insert himself into her life as the hero. But this time he's, like, smarter about it and stuff. And it works. Not to mention Rem...

When she confesses to Subaru, she doesn't talk about how Subaru has changed. To the contrary, she talks about how good Subaru has *always been*. Subaru has always been a hero. He's always been caring. He's always been resilient, and he just needs to stop hating himself.

So you can *say* Re:Zero is about Subaru changing all you want. You can have characters *act* like this is the case. But the events of the story proper don't reflect this theme. It's not something you see at first, but it's so hard to unsee once you do.

We can keep going, right? The story is supposed to be about how Subaru isn't the center of the universe, but we only ever see the other characters through his own perspective. We see Emilia: as relevant to Subaru. Felt: as relevant to Subaru. Ram: as relevant to Subaru.

Not to mention Subaru's power, Return by Death, literally means whether or not the spacetime continuum itself moves is... up to Subaru and his emotions. Subaru can just kill himself and reset time. The universe quite literally revolves around him.

In a vacuum this would be okay! Steven Universe is a show that also has a locked POV on its main character. But Steven Universe isn't a show about how the world *doesn't* revolve around its MC. Steven is quite literally the most important character in the show.

If Steven Universe tried to claim Steven was wrong for thinking himself as important as he is, without changing the structure of the show it wouldn't work in the same Re:Zero as it exist does not work.

The show *acts* like all these characters have nuances and so on. But we don't *see* it usually. We're told that this is the case. Beatrice at the beginning of S1 is an exception, and would you look at that the first 5 eps of Re:Zero are the only ones I enjoy. Interesting.

Which brings us, then, to the most recent episode of S2. Where it's asserted to us that numerous female characters are strong and independent, right before the show itself shows us this is not true.

Now, again, not being a #GirlBoss does not make a bad character. I quite like Ram, for example, in theory. But I wouldn't assert that Ram is a #GirlBoss when her entire thing is just "I am loyal to someone more powerful than me". She wears a maid outfit lmao
