Last season I promised to release mini analyses of the running anime that piqued my interest/gave us stuff to talk about. Unfortunately life got in the way. It's actually happening this time around. These threads will be updated regularly and may become essays. DEMON ACADEMY
-
This show... FUCKING SUCKS *HOLY SHIT*
-
I feel comfortable in saying that this was one of the worst-written things I've ever experienced in recent memory. Which means of course it makes a fantastic essay
-
I haven't even seen episode 2 yet I'm still blown away by how terrible episode 1 was. What the actual fuck. Where do I even begin?
-
The show is just a vehicle for making this character as overpowered as humanly possible. He fuckin kills a guy over and over again for fun on screen because he can. We're never given any indication that he can lose a fight, and he instantly wins over the people around him so
-
What's the point of the show? What's the conflict? Why do I care??? I don't! OOPS
-
And then we meet this girl, who's basically in love with him because the guy... picked up a letter she dropped? THAT COULD'VE BEEN ANYONE LADY. But know we're head over heels in love with protagonist-sama of course
-
THIS WOMAN WATCHED HIM KILL AND TORTURE A GUY OVER AND OVER
-
AND SHE SAYS WHAT A NICE PERSON HE PICKED A LETTER FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'M S E N T
-
The show wants to have it both ways. It wants the overpowered protagonists capable of razing his enemies to the ground, and "badass" enough to commit war crimes but still the unambiguously good person who gets the girls and is loved by all. Anos is Naofumi, is what I'm saying
-
No but like imagine if we actually cared about the Demon King's character. Imagine if we saw the character traits that made him dangerous 2,000 years ago, instead of him being an overpowered self-insert masturbatory fantasy. Can't have that. Then the show might actually be good
-
All the dialogue is extremely functional. Everything is explained in excruciating detail and yet we understand nothing. "World building" happens in the sense that names are thrown out out of context. No logic links any event in the past to any events in the future.
-
I haven't lost my shit at an anime like this in FOREVER wow The Misfit of Demon King Academy has no redeeming qualities to it whatsoever. We're really at the bottom of the fucking barrel with one, folks
-
What's really frustrating about Demon Academy is that it has anti-"racism" as a central theme of the show. Time and time again our protagonist is discriminated against because he comes from an impure bloodline, and there's an unfair caste hierarchy that runs demon society
-
But it doesn't work because the caste hierarchy is based on genetic closeness to the original demon lord who IS OUR PROTAGONIST SO HE IS BY DEFINITION GENETICALLY SUPERIOR TO EVERYONE ELSE It's so poorly thought out but the show KEEPS DOING IT like it's accomplishing something
-
This is Kill la Kill all over again. You have a protagonist that's supposed to be against genetic hierarchy only for it to turn out the protagonist was the übermensch the whole time. Except KlK took ~17 episodes to make that mistake. Demon Academy fucked up ep1
-
The show continues to have no stakes. Like, there's one bit in the middle of episode 2 where it's he and the white-haired girl against an entire group of students and MC is like "we'll outsmart them don't worry"
-
No strategy was involved. He's just too strong for his 10 opponents or whatever. How do I see that and not go "wow yeah there's no reason he's ever losing a fight to anyone in this whole show"? And, if that's the point, why continue to have fight scenes if I know the outcome?
-
Every time I see an isekai like this with an overpowered male lead I wonder why even have a supporting cast in the first place. Whether it's Shield Hero or 8th son or Demon Academy, the over-centralization of the lead robs all other characters of agency
-
Episode 3 may have actually been the least bad episode of the show? But then somewhere along the way uwu-ified girl was like... I can't do it justice how stupid this is. I'll just grab some screencaps
-
The show tries to act like this is foreshadowing with how her eyes work with emotion but... Okay, see, the larger problem is not really that it's unexpected, but that I don't care.
-
It's episode *3*. We've gone from not knowing who she is to doing a full redemption arc to a full romantic subplot + kiss to ACTUALLY IT WAS ALL A LIE. I don't have the time or spoons to give a shit. Stuff just happens in this show and I'm forced to accept it
-
At this point I'm going to have a ton of fun tearing this show apart in a real video so this thread may not be updated as much
-
So unfortunately I don't have any screenshots because my computer crapped out, but yeah this show doesn't get any better.
-
Misha and Anos go on a "date". There's this art in this world where people make magic snowglobes and the smaller the snowglobe the better it's supposed to be. Misha is apparently very good at this.
-
And I was like "is the show gonna let Misha be good at something or is Anos gonna immediately be better than anyone who ever existed" Of course Anos produces to make a one-of-a-kind masterpiece in an art he's never practiced before. Obviously.
-
Later Misha is looking at Anos' snowglobe and Anos is like "there you are with your good eyes again." So I'm like, SURE this can't be her talent, right? Having good... eyes? (It was her talent) (obviously)
-
This is the Re:Zero problem again where the show wants Misha to help Anos for romance's sake but it's written itself into a corner where Anos has to be stronger than everyone, especially the women.
-
Oh my God could you imagine? Anos getting beat by a girl? The 13-year-olds who use this as self-insert wish-fulfillment couldn't handle the embarrassment! It could just... write more than one character and be good. But it refuses.
-
What else. Uh, the mom is a waifu. This is someone's fetish for sure. Nothing makes sense as usual. I'm beginning to suspect the fantasy here is beating up your school bullies and making your parents proud
-
It is hard to do justice how fucking terrible this show is. Honest to God it is legitimately the worst anime that exists. Yes it's worse than Garzey's Wing, I've seen that shit already.
-
I'm... I'm not even sure where to begin here. Is it the harem that's supposed to be a Civil Right's Movement singing a God-awful song to the praises of our protagonist? Because that's all they're here to do?
-
And then the stupid song comes back later in the episode like it's supposed to be an emotional beat or something. The fucking harem wasn't even named until this episode. Fuck me.
-
Or is it maybe that this show thinks it's making a deep point on race when it "punishes" its "racist" teacher by forcing her to live life over and over again as a racial minority? I'm not fucking making that up!
-
"Hey, do you hate black people? Your PUNISHMENT is to live life half-black! Now you'll understand what it's like to be discriminated against!" "Btw I'm powerful enough to take over this country and end racism tomorrow" *bangs head against fucking wall*
