I wanna dispel a myth I'll call "u-shaped left compatibility". Maybe that's kind of an overcomplicated name for what I'm tryna say here but whatever.
-
This kind of thinking asserts that conservatives are like, malformed leftists. They're people who recognize the ills of liberalism but are tricked into blaming their problems on other workers instead of capitalists.
-
If left compatibility were u-shaped, it would make sense to be super careful not to alienate conservatives from the movement or make fun of them or call them out unless they have "institutional backing" or whatever.
-
After all, according to this logic, bigotry isn't really real, it's more people parroting rhetoric designed to deflect blame from the system. Plus, conservatives are already against the status quo (being liberalism) so they're key to winning the working class.
-
This thinking breeds a whole crowd of anti-idpol, anti-wokescold, anti-cancel culture "leftists" who believe the biggest obstacle to the left is... other leftists. Specifically, leftists who alienate conservatives by calling out bigotry (so-caled "cancelling")
-
The idea that conservatives are the "real working class" who "just want their jobs back", while liberals are rich elites who prattle on about colonialism and gender performativity is LITERALLY A RIGHT-WING TALKING POINT so it's a little concerning that leftists buy into it
-
Every study we have shows that racism is a greater predictor of if someone supports Trump than economic populism psmag.com/news/new-study-confirms-again-that-race-not-economics-drove-former-democrats-to-trump
-
Every study we have shows that marginalized people (THE PEOPLE MOST LIKELY TO RECOGNIZE THE FLAWS IN THE SYSTEM) are the most sympathetic to socialism pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/06/25/stark-partisan-divisions-in-americans-views-of-socialism-capitalism/
-
The idea that most conservatives are just ordinary people who are just as fed up with liberalism as we are is just wrong. Conservatives hate liberalism because they want to defend their place in the hierarchy. Either the class hierarchy or gender or race or sexuality or ableism
-
Why some sections of the left are so hyperfocused on winning over conservatives, to the point where they'll interrupt important conversations in marginalized spaces, when ALL DATA shows this is a waste of fucking time, is beyond me
