          Despite the fact that the dynamics behind the two are exactly the same, only the latter will ever be called "cancel culture". Any hot take on so-called "cancel culture" that does not address why this is is a pretty bad take on cancel culture.

        The idea that the system can be changed if we all decide to consume "better", more "ethical" products under capitalism is of course a liberal fantasy. By personally deciding to never by from Amazon you're not fixing the system that allows the company to exploit.

    However, the phrase "cancel culture", as it exists in this current climate, is a reactionary dog whistle. What offends reactionaries is the idea that marginalized groups can collectively decide that some behaviors or ideas are not socially acceptable.

      This terrifies them. Even though, ultimately, the balance of power isn't actually changing. And that's why, these two events, only a few years apart, are treated entirely differently by the public consciousness. That's why it bothers me when leftists buy into "cancel culture".

        If you see GamerGate as an understandable reaction to the neoliberal fetishization of idpol but "progressive" harassment campaigns as "cancel culture", you're fucking lost. We can be anti-harassment and not legitimize right-wing talking points about OURSELVES like morons
