            1. If you search hard enough online you'll find plenty of people who are leftists for the "wrong" reasons.

You'll find anarchists who are really just liberals taking advantage of the fact that anarchism is anti-state to never have to reevaluate what they've been taught about the USSR, Vietnam, Cuba etc

You'll find MLs who don't care about the working class or building socialism in their own communities. They just think all the videos of Soviet soldiers marching in step to the beat of the Red Army Choir are neat

If you wanted to, you could spend all of your time obsessing over these kinds of people. You'd make hella Twitter threads with all sorts of engagement. You'll go to sleep proud of yourself, just to wake up and realize we still live in this neoliberal capitalist hellscape

What I'm getting at here is to avoid being what I like to call a "theoretical leftist" By that I mean Someone who's hip to how "it's all propaganda, man" but whose actions change nothing materially

I'm drawn to anarchism for this reason, though it applies to other disciplines as well: if you spend all of your time thinking about geopolitics and 0% of your time thinking about your own community, you're doing it wrong.

You can't singlehandedly stop the war in Yemen, and thinking you can is part of what leads to theoretical leftism. But you can team up with a dozen people near you and remove all the anti-houseless spikes in your local park.

Joining an org isn't really about finding the org most aligned with your personal brand of leftism but finding the most effective way someone with your time and money can meet other people who vaguely share your principles
