I've wanted to do a thread around "doing things that affect other people" for a while now. But I myself am also new to this concept. So you're kinda learning with me. I'll make more threads as I gain more experience with doing more complicated kinds of leftist action.

The point of organizing in my opinion is not to find the specific institution that matches your preferred ideology, but to find the instruments that most easily convert your will to change stuff into actual change. The following resources are all US-based.
-
Joining the IWW, for example, is a really good place to start. They have low, flexible dues. Even if you end up not becoming a labor organizer, your contribution helps other labor organizers do all sorts of concrete things iww.org/

The DSA is another good beginner-friendly org, not necessarily because the party itself is free from criticism, but because it's a multi-tendency coalition that organizes both in and out of elections dsausa.org/
-
Caucuses inside the DSA, like the Libertarian Socialist Caucus and the Communist Caucus, are actually better and more radical than the party as a whole. And there many, many are others too that are also good dsausa.org/get-involved/

If you have the money and time to obtain a firearm, or you already have a firearm, consider joining the Socialist Rifle Association. The SRA doesn't organize armed rallies to avoid being labeled a militia, but they still do important education work socialistra.org/

It's Going Down has an entire list of Mutual Aid Groups that have sprung up in response to COVID-19 that you can join and donate to. They also have stuff organized around helping people affected by the fires out west itsgoingdown.org/c19-mutual-aid/

If you have friends (shocking, I know) who are all leftists, and meeting a bunch of new people sounds intimidating to you, you can do stuff with them! It's called an Affinity Group en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affinity_group

If there are houseless people near you, gather some friends and ask them what they need. Ask them why social services has failed for them. Organize around providing for their needs. Or just cover your neighborhood stop signs in agitprop. Anything to get people thinking.

The left always needs more propagandists. It needs more leftist authors, artists, comic-creators, podcasters, actors, essayists... you name it. If you can make something, make it leftist and post it online.
-
And if you have any specialized skills, if you're an educator or a doctor or a programmer or anything like that, you can bring those perspectives to any of the things I mentioned above.

Reading is good. Getting educated and the like, but don't fetishize theory. We are living through a unique period of world history. We have a lot of questions that Kropotkin, Marx, and Lenin don't have answers to. But experience will. @__MoBlack/1260448139301081092

There's a lot people can and should be doing. If you were on the fence about starting any sort of project or direct action and you happen upon this thread, I'd really encourage you to take the first step.

You don't have to become a seasoned cadre, buff and swole and ready to fist-fight Jeff Bezos all at once. It's okay to start small. Just start instead of like not starting?
