      The situation in Guinea I think is maybe too complicated for a tweet. Chiefly, that political parties in Africa tend to be built as much around ethnicity as they are ideology. I don't want to 1:1 transpose the ongoing situation in Guinea onto the US.

        I am bringing this up though to combat a kind of liberal chauvinism I've seen leading up to the elections in the US. Chiefly: the idea that electoral conflict, ambiguous results, and sectarian violence are things "poor countries do" and somehow it won't happen here just because.

          White Americans seem to think they're the exception by birthright. That America is a fundamentally good and stable and too civilized to deal with the problems the countries Americans exploit know all too well. But US history, much of it in living memory, shows the opposite
