        The story features an older gymnast at the end of his career following a lackluster performance in the last championship. His coach begs him to quit while he's still (somewhat) ahead, but he can't bring himself to do it for the sake of his only child.

      I think the interesting thing about Taiso Samurai is that, on the one hand, all the personalities are exaggerated for comedic effect. But on the other, they all feel real. Like, more real than most anime characters and their cliches.

    I especially love the daughter character. Her personality isn't "template loli child fetishism" like in so many shows. She's just allowed to be herself: a cute little kid who lives ninjas and loves her dad even more

        Politically, I think the fact that one of the characters is actively trying not to be deported will rub some the wrong way. And it does have this gender non-conforming character that it plays for a joke at first.

          On that latter one, it turns out to not be nearly as bad as it could be, because he turns out to be perfectly complex and genuine character. But playing into the expectation that gender nc people are dangerous for laughs isn't worth doing just to subvert it.
