On the one hand, I couldn't articulate anything the show does wrong per se. It's a competently done mystery series with a consistent tone and characters that seem well-grounded more or less.

If you're into the high-society Sherlock Holmes dark mystery vibe you'll certainly find a lot to enjoy in this show.

At the same time, it hasn't really grabbed my interest. We have a dark version of Sherlock Holmes, who toes the line between commoner and noble, who solves crimes by just offing criminals instead of handing them over to law enforcement.

There's a lot that can be done with that kind of set-up but I don't see any of that taking place here.

I think this is a case of "give it one or two more episodes to better understand where the creators want to take the show". I'm tepidly on board for now.

Oh and not to make it political or anything, but if you want to show a class divide in the British Empire and the United States in the 1800 to early 1900s, a few black characters here and there would really push the narrative over the line. Just pointing it out 😕 *sigh*

Pleasantly surprised to be wrong about Moriarty as it is indeed communist as fuck. You can see my reaction threads here: @__MoBlack/1320447469482889216

While I'd still welcome a few more characters of color, Moriarty has already proven that it's serious about making thoughtful observations about class, poverty, capitalism, and happiness.

Deca-Dence was a god-send for last season that was otherwise kind of mediocre. And likewise Moriarty comes through with the materialist itch I've been waiting for. But the one advantage it has over Deca-Dence is that it addresses these issues directly instead of by metaphor

I cannot wait to see what this show has in store for us next.
