So I promised I was going to rewatch the Emilia/Subaru argument from season 2 part 2 so that's what this thread is
-
Sorry I'm literally taking notes here my bad
-
OKAY I GOT IT I actually really don't like analyzing Re:Zero because it's rarely good but the reasons why are always super complicated
-
So earlier in my Season 2 Part 2 episodes 1-2 thread I kinda complained that I could follow Subaru and Emilia's argument. I attributed it to being tired but I'm (less) tired right now and it's still confusing.
-
Usually when you have arguments in fiction, the best way to write it (or at least, what I do when I write fiction) is to take two opposing ideas, two opposing personalities, wind them up, and let them loose
-
So, in this argument, Emilia actually has 4 different grievances against Subaru. And Subaru more or less responds to each of them, no matter what she's actually saying, with "but I love you tho".
-
Emilia's positions are, summarized and in order 1. You don't have any expectations for me/you treat me like a doll 2. You abandoned me when I needed you 3. I can't trust that you love me since you also say I have flaws 4. My memories are coming back and I'm stressed in general
-
I think, largely, what this conversation was *supposed* to be was Emilia not believing that Suabru loves her, and Subaru reassuring her. But the author boils all of Emilia's trauma down to "she doesn't believe in Subaru hard enough"
-
TL;DR - So this conversation is a mess. But it's a mess because, as usual, Emilia is being treated like an object. The specifics of what Emilia is going through matter less than the fact that she is going through something. And they only matter in terms of how Subaru feels.
-
Subaru loves Emilia in general, but is unwilling to wrap his head around what's happening to her specifically. He'd rather declare that her eyes are sparkly than help her through her trauma. The narrative is somehow convinced this is a good thing, actually
