A story about the one black samurai could have easily reduced Africa to the monolithic foreign place where black people come from, but instead we get "Yasuke is from this part of Africa with this culture, distinct from other places"
-
This is Yasuke btw
-
POV: you are about to be colonized
-
But seriously though I appreciate the villain being a white Christian missionary
-
So thoughts so far now that we're halfway through
-
Yasuke's storytelling structure definitely feels more Western than anime? I don't have it to where I can say what it is specifically, but we've noted that much of it feels like a blend of a comic book (X-Men specifically) and a fighting game
-
Are there socialist vibes? Not really. But, I remain impressed by how Yasuke naturally emphasizes where, say, women or gay people would have existed in Japan during this period and tells their story. A lazy author would say "well there were no X in 16th century Japan"

Yasuke's skin is so beautiful 🥺

The finale 😳

By the way I'm still invested in the writing and characters. The last few episodes just a look a little worse than the first few
