My main interest in the show came from how it'd treat the Zobel empire. Given its industrialization, military expansionism, love for war crimes and genocide, matching grey uniforms, and flamethrowers, I think it's safe to say we've got ourselves a Nazi parallel

I was hoping the over the top nature of the framing here would lead to an interesting case where humor is used to highlight the failures and atrocities of fascism. But I don't think the writers have thought that far ahead.

It's the Kill la Kill problem, basically, where when they make the villains fascists you assume it's trying to say something about that but it ain't. It's just aesthetics.

The real problem so far is the point of empathy. The Zobel empire is raping and killing entire populations and the show is extremely persistent about making us not care about it.

Our protagonists are gods who treat humans the way humans treat animal wildlife. They hear the prayers of those being raped and murdered and they're like "eh, none my business tbh". They repeat myths about overpopulation and openly wonder why they can't just commit genocide

Now consider that the show is about an evil shadowy race of demons controlling the world from behind the scenes in order to reproduce and take over the world. It's softer than fascist propaganda. More like fascist subtext. The writers are sus

On the quality side of things, the cast feels flatter and flatter by the episode. Ysley and Prontea are perhaps exceptions but it's not enough to salvage the rest. And then ofc there's the whole "treating sexual assault as a joke that women secretly want" bit

The animation is nice but we know MAPPA didn't pay the people who did it so. Not sure if it's the worst show this season, but it is my personal biggest letdown
