I think I'm going to do it. I'm going to watch Squid Game. This is the Squid Game thread, with Squid Game spoilers
-
I'm putting episode 2 here. The thread would get unwieldy otherwise
-
You know what I fucking forgot to tweet? "Kirito if you die in the game you die in real life." with a screencap of the first dude getting shot. fuck it would've been so funny. and now the moment is gone forever
-
"If you just follow the rules you can leave safely" > interacting with American cops
-
But the same people who defend cops think the pink guys in Squid Game have a point lmao. No saving them
-
And I like how the only real way out of this is for everyone to collectively make the decision to defend themselves. Every player has to decide they don't want to. It's really, really well-positioned politically.
-
They're doing a union vote, and the games use the promise of bonuses for a few to break the solidarity of the many
-
And I like that per eliminated player the prize money grows, to get you thinking that you can personally beat the system and win, rather than the correct choice of ending the system of exploitation and death
-
"It's just as bad out there as it is in here" the show is really obvious. this is a good thing, but it's funny how much of the discourse is like, not getting still somehow
-
They fucking call it a democracy even though one group of people manufactured the circumstances behind the vote to suit their interests. Isn't that funny. It's almost as if it's a dictatorship of a certain class of people
-
Two entire characters that cannot afford medical costs
-
ALI FUCKIN MERC'D HIS BOSS, TOOK HIS PAYCHECK AND LEFT BEST CHARACTER. BASED. POGGERS. WOOBLIE PILLED
-
Oh it's wobblie-pilled. Like the IWW
-
A second character says that it's worse outside, in capitalism, than in the game. But please, I'm sooo confused what is this show trying to say??
-
Seong Gi-Hun watched a guy die at work instead of being there for his child's birth, and then was laid off later. The show's criticism of capitalism is rather thorough. It's not just the debt and the violence, it also makes relationships impossible
-
Wow I ended up finishing this episode. I am so tired. My homework is unfinished. Tomorrow is going to be hell. But I think this was worth it
-
This is what a critique of capitalism looks like. What'll put Squid Game over the edge is if it starts advocating for any kind of socialism as a solution. So I'll look out for that
-
I like that everyone that decides to go back quite literally has no choice. We're shown their options. they have none. The Squid Game isn't voluntary
-
I'm looking for, basically: a) is it as good as people say b) how far its critique of capitalism really goes. Watching dubbed because """Netflix""" is having trouble with the subbed version rn. I also like dubs, actually
-
Korean kids games have a lot of dimension to them. When I was a kid we played tag, shadow tag, hide and go seek. I think the most complicated games we played were basketball and kickball. Do kids even play outside anymore? I'm not that old
-
A character that is in poverty but does not really understand what that means or the dynamics of it is a pretty interesting angle. I'm not sure if it's common or uncommon in Korean media but it's sorta uncommon in the things I consume. I'll put a pin in this
-
The voice actors are really good, but somehow we've reincarnated the tired "sub vs dub" debate from anime circa 2004 to pretend like voice acting is a worthless art because the voices don't match the mouth movements or whatever the fuck
-
I like that the show starts with signing a contract under duress, though I cannot possibly imagine this happening again on a larger, more fantastical scale
-
His gambling gives me anxiety
-
One consequence of making the protagonist a gambling addict is that we potentially obfuscate the criticism of the economic systems w/the individual choices that led to the addiction. Luckily there are other factors, like the family being born into poverty, to contend with here
-
I'm also deeply invested right now, and we have most of the first episode left, so for now it clears the "is it written well" bar with flying colors
-
He is TRYING 😠
-
the fact that he played a second time like
-
I like that he tried to start a business after getting laid off. That's the kind of detail I was looking for. He's here because he tried to play the game and it didn't work, not because he made bad choices or something
-
Nooo don't move to America it sucks here
-
Give my man Gi-Hun his daughter man. Okay well he's not in the position to be a good father right *now* but HE WILL SOON I BELIEVE 😭😭 in the heart of the cards
-
I am beginning to realize how much better The Hunger Games would've been, narratively speaking, if the participants agreed to do it instead of being forced to by law. This is a whole other conversation
-
We're also going to watch for how the show portrays North Korea. There was a great article about how a lot of South Korean media is more critical of the US than North Korea, but I can't find it quickly and I'd rather keep watching
-
No one is asking what happens if they lose. I am sure this will not come up later, etc
-
I remember reading that falling for email/phone scams is a big problem in shelters. Not because people are stupid, but because they have less to lose if it is a scam and much more to win if it's real. Infosec becomes a significant issue when organizing in houseless communities
-
Again if I find the paper later I'll tweet about it seperately
-
I love that privacy is something only afforded to the rich. The poor have their entire life stories and debt on public record. The rich are kidnapping and killing people, obvious crimes, and their lives, names, and faces are secret
-
they said if you move you get eliminated why they movin why they movin why they movin why they movin why they movin why they movin stop stop stop I am so stressed
-
I also like how, at this point, it's not really a game. It's just the mass slaughter of the poor. This would not be entertaining to watch unless you specifically derived joy from watching poor people die. ✨ social commentary ✨
-
So I did also play red light green light as a kid
-
That was so cool, oh my God
-
It's pretty late and these are not anime, so an hour long each. But I'm too hooked to not start episode 2
