                1. So I read Komi up to where I stopped with the anime yesterday and I think I'd say the answer is yes...ish? @Craigthinkspeak/1456586472417480707

The anime adaptation is pretty faithful to the manga, only really skipping a chapter here or there to save time. Everyone does and says the same stuff so everyone is just as horny, and it undermines the story just as much

But I also think, somehow, when it's in print it feels less... gross? Like compare this moment in the manga to how it was in the anime. Part of the issue is that the manga art is kinda sterile. Not a fan of the art at all

But there are also things the anime changes to make it less weird. Like in the manga stalker lesbian has a straight up knife and not chopsticks. Because she's a stereotypical yandere

So my best explanation is that the source material already has these traits that I think are issues, and the anime does what an adaptation is supposed to do, just lean in on the things that make the story the way it is: everyone being horny for Komi

There are things in the manga that I think are solidly worse than the anime, but I can't tell if it comes down to translation or not. For example, Najimi Osana is straight up called a liar for being trans. Why is Tadano so grossed out by her?

Komi being HWITE is solidly a thing in the manga, but she also apparently has an eating disorder.

Komi-san is skinny enough to be mistaken for malnutrition but also the most athletic girl in her class

Anyway as I was reading I got decided to calculate the expected value of the thumb game they play. Yubisuma works as follows

Let X represent a player having either thumb up or down, where a single thumbs up is worth a score of 1 and a thumbs down is worth 0. E[X] is just the probability of each outcome times the total score for that thumb configuration
        1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
          Assuming every thumb configuration is equally likely you get E[X] = 1/4 ( (0+0) + (0+1) + (1+0) + (1+1) ) = 1. If there are N people playing the expected value of all their thumbs is N * E[X]
          1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
So at the beginning of the game, you're most likely to win if you just guess the number of people playing. However, as people win, they take their thumbs away. The expected value of just one independent thumb E[T] = 1/2 by the same formula
            1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
So in the general case, you are most likely to win every round of Yubisuma by guessing t/2, where t is the total number of thumbs left in the game. And indeed it checks out because at the beginning there are 2N thumbs, so 2N * E[T] = N * E[X] = N/2 = N

It was somewhere around here that I realized that the fact Komi san compelled me to do discrete math is probably a testament to how little I am actually enjoying it
