                    1. I finally caught up on Ranking of Kings. It's fun, emotional, and very pretty and unique-looking. I think it's also probably... not as well written as people have been saying? Like, 🧵

My main issue right now is that, it feels like it was written with the philosophy that every character has to be sympathetic: as in has to have good traits and bad traits. This isn't necessarily a bad thing.

But the way it's done in Ranking these characters will be abusive, and then they'll also be incredibly caring, and we'll be given no explanation into how these two are the same person

Like the mom, right? Early on we see her abusing her disable child, to the point she makes him cry. Then we're later told she cares deeply for al her children. And it's like, it's true abusive people can be kind and kind people can be toxic but...

...there's no connective tissue between these two aspects of her character. We're just shown both side by side and the show acts like it's fait accompli.

Or like when King Bosse sees his first born son for the first time he declares that his life has ended and he wants to give his son the world. But he's also very clearly not done with accumulating power and screwing over his kids so.

And it's like, both can be true but you have to explain so I can contextualize the decisions he's making

I prefer "this guy is evil and power hungry" characters over "morally grey" characters if "moral grey" just means not ever understanding why anyone does what they do and no one has a consistent internal logic

No one's allowed to just be a bad person. Everyone who does a bad thing has to have a secret good side or a change of heart. Which doesn't *sound* so bad until you realize it means watching characters do absolutely fucked up shit and having that not face consequences because...

...the character felt bad about doing the fucked up thing while they were doing it, so I guess were cool now. No one has to live with the bad decisions they make because there's always something that makes it not really their fault. And so these decisions don't have weight.

It's also doing the thing that Re:Zero did where it'll keep you watching by not telling you things you'd probably be better off knowing (but I find it much, much less annoying than Re:Zero here)

Still, we almost never get sympathetic, disabled protagonists and there's a lot to like (Bojji and Kage mainly) so I won't be the one complaining too hard about it. There's a vibe here. Plus, look, strong lady 🤤
