While I queue, I'd like to emphasize that the least bad thing about Velma is the diversity. Shaggy being Black, Velma and Daphne being queer, or even characters generally not acting like themselves is not my operative problems here.

I personally grew up on Mystery Inc and a few of the early 2000s animated films. Scooby Doo shouldn't be doomed to be frozen in that era just because that was my experience with the show. Velma in particular just seems to be, from what I can tell, poorly written

CN: Velma epsiode 2 This depiction of blerds... I don't like it. But I haven't really figured out why yet so we'll put a pin on it

CN: Velma episode 2 I am not against the concept of mocking white people. There are witnesses that can attest to this. I am against writing a mystery show with a close-minded, intellectually in-curious protagonist

CN: Velma episode 2 Just, this caricature of a clean Black man who would never do a drug and always goes to class it's just... I don't like it. Someone help me out. Surely I'm onto something here

CN: Velma episode 2 as a Black guy who doesn't drink or like drugs personally and has always been into nerdy stuff, it just feels like it's making fun of me. like, the fact that I am Black and not whatever stereotype is inherently funny

CN: Velma episode 2 So Shaggy acts this way because he was raised by white people. This is worse. Isn't this worse? This is definitely worse

CN: Velma episode 2 This is supposed to be commentary on how white people can get away with crimes by using the media's bias towards them and a presumption of innocence, but Fred really hasn't committed any crimes here. So it's actually saying nothing

CN: Velma episode 2 Also, it made sense that Mystery Inc Velma was judgmental because she was actually a super genius and literally smarter than everyone around her. The distance with normal people and her inability to get things she cared about to go her way gave her the 'tude

CN: Velma episode 2 So you watch Scooby Doo. A fun story but, since it was made in the 70s, probably lacking in diversity by todays standards. You analyze all the previous media and your one conclusion is that "Fred would be a psychopath because he is white and a man"

CN: Velma episode 2 Again, I'm not running defense for the cracker jack community. It's a myopic and superficial analysis of the original show. And a big part of why the show as a whole is equally myopic and superficial. It's not saying anything

Okay so that's episode 2 basically. Daphne and Velma kiss but yeah. Keeping a running list of problems will help me when it's time to write the essay so let's do that. What's not working is fun and gets clicks. But *why* are things not working is my interest

Truthfully, I'm actually not sure yet. On the one side we have a lot of problematic, regressive ideas kind of packaged in "woke" language and hidden behind references to tropes. On the other, we have this really poorly written mystery element and confused overall storytelling

I want to say both are caused by Velma being an obvious self-insert. Mindy Kaling is, well, Mindy Kaling. She has her baggage I guess. But, if she has the intellectual curiosity for being a mystery protagonist, it is not on display in these episodes

If the creative force behind the show was too uninterested to explore its own mysteries, it was DEFINITELY too uninterested to properly navigate tropes around fatphobia or mixed Black people, or whatever. The take don't got that dog in it yet. I've got 8 episodes to work on it
