Velma Episode 3 thread will be here in a bit, after I "acquire" it from "HBO Max" and eat. I didn't eat today yet. Oops

Pre-viewing thoughts: Been seeing a lot of comparisons to High Guardian Spice lately. Probably not a surprise to y'all that I do not think the situations are remotely similar, other than the fact that they both have "diversity" and manchildren complaining about said "diversity"
-
Don't want to do a whole thing but in a nutshell: HGS's issues, imo, come from a lack of time due to the show itself being screwed over. It has fundamentally good ideas, but wonky execution in writing and animation that can be attributed to how CR handled the property
-
Velma has fundamentally bad ideas. Maybe time was a problem, but more time wouldn't fix this I don't think. Example: making the protagonist of your mystery series a judgmental, closed-minded jerk is a bad idea because those qualities go against the point of a mystery series
-
sorry for forgetting alt-text on some of these. I'll remember from now on

CN: Velma episode 3 I'm not the most qualified the dissect why it's bad, but I don't like the vibes. All the "diversity" in the show just feels off. I'm trying to put that into words.
-
CN: Velma episode 3 My kneejerk reaction is why can't Velma just be gay? Why is it this spectacle? I'm not saying she can't struggle with her identity or feel nervous about it. That'd be cool. I'm asking why the narrative itself doesn't let her go through that
-
I'll be honest, my motivation to continue watching is super low, right now.
-
CN: Velma episode 3 As an aside, I don't like feeling embarrassed for characters. Like, it makes me want to stop watching or skip the scene. But everyone in this show is embarrassing all of the time. I think that is the main source of the pain in my chest rn
-
CN: Velma episode 3 I'll be honest. This was a lot worse than I expected. That was a genuinely unpleasant experience. These are like, truly baffling story decisions at times, and it's extremely difficult to imagine what the intended viewing experience here was
-
CN: Velma episode 3 I guess Daphne and Velma needed to work out their feelings for each other? But why did it have to be a tournament arc? And why the forced argument? And why reading her diary outload? Not to mention treating that like it wasn't a big deal? When it is??
-
CN: Velma episode 3 *out loud, sorry. And there's another episode, great. I'll queue in a sec. I need, like, a breather.
