this'll probably be on the short side because I have some late night homework to get back to. But if you want a longer thread I recommend this one! @brainchild129/1369489790115192832

"In the wake of last week's video some people were wondering where Mushoku Tensei was" yeah because it's trash

"Its protagonist is only very technically not a pedophile for now" ...

Mushoku Tensei is like a downgrade from SAO tho like look the essay it's coming you've heard me say it
  1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
I'm gonna let it play for a little bit and then come back with arguments
    1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
I'm not sure how you include this scene in your essay and not realize how it invalidates all claims of Mushoku Tensei being salvageable as art

okay so now he's talking about how Mushoku Tensei looks pretty which I don't give a shit how pretty it is if it's garbage
        1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
So there're a couple of claims here to unpack 1. So the reason why isekai is bad nowadays is because stories try to copy wish fulfillment tropes, while Mushoku Tensei did these tropes for ✨~story~✨ Um No? No
          1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
And here's where I really wish I'd published my isekai essay drafts because I have done all this analysis before. But it's not the copying itself that makes isekai bad. It's actually a combination of the tropes, the framing, and the target audience
            1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
Mushoku Tensei is just a wish fulfillment story again. Later isekai stories would iterate on this process, strip out the part where it kind of pretends its not wish fulfillment and add a bunch of irony and self-awareness, but it's not *different* from other isekai

                2. He's not horny, but psychologically conditioned to be a pervert because it's all he knows how to do ... this is such a fantastical claim. Maybe @ThatBlueHatGuy1 or @sovwinterprison have heard this one and can make a better rebuttal but all I have to say is...
                1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
...part of the reason we know Jobless is just a whish fulfillment is how it treats this "perversion". It acts like his behavior is something he can't control and something he got from being bullied. It's something that can only be cured by being treated right by others (women)
                  1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
3a. "You're not supposed to like him/you're not supposed to think he's a good person" EVERYONE SAYS THIS ABOUT EVERY BAD SHOW. "You're not supposed to like Naofumi" "You're not supposed to like Kazuya" "You're not supposed to like-" yeah okay no see
                    1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
It doesn't actually matter to the argument if I'm supposed to "like" or "think he's a good person". The question is about the behavior of the protagonist.
                      1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
When the protagonist commits "bad" behavior, who is centered? The protagonist or the person they hurt? Why does the show say this behavior is bad? What does the show say he must do to fix it? These go beyond "such and such is a good person"
                        1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
3b. "The show shows his behavior hurts the women around him" not in a way that matters
                          1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
gonna let it play some more
                            1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
so he argues that Mushoku Tensei shows Rudy's growth by him respecting the women around him, but then admits that the show undercuts this by showing that his peverted behavior has not changed DOES THAT NOT MEAN NO REAL GROWTH IS TAKING PLACE
                              1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
Okay he's gonna try and argue against this really obvious point let's see
                                1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
The argument becomes that because the story isn't finished we just haven't seen the arc finish and like I'm *pretty* I did a podcast on this about Bad Anime Defenses Geoff should listen to my podcast
                                  1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
more concretely the author has basically said that he never really intended for Rudy's perversion to like... go away? Rather he only wanted it to scale back some so he could be a functioning member of society. And indeed that's what the writing does
                                    1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
So here's a weird isekai defense "well it's not like he's GIVEN everything he has to WORK for it" but he still gets it right? he's still stronger than everyone else so it's still the same fantasy
                                      1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
REALLY need to finish Bullshit no Yuusha because then I won't have to write these I could just link the appropriate part of the essay

man I haven't even seen the last few episodes so this will be fun to watch him defend
                                          1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
Man I want to watch the show that Geoff thinks Mushoku Tensei is. A show that understands consent, that uses fanservice with purpose, that handles topics like sexual assault in a way that's meaningful and progressive. It sounds nice
                                            1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
Since I haven't seen the scene he's talking about yet I can't argue that he's wrong. But I can say: showing an on-screen sexual assault attempt and making it about how the man who did it feels afterwards is pretty disqualifying for handling this topic correctly
                                              1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
Since he brings up SAO as a show that does it *wrong*, I will point that SAO II has a scene where a woman is attacked, but it's from her perspective, following a season-long arc about her trauma. And that to me is bear minimum
                                                1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
so other thing Geoff notes Rudy often points out how bad a person the men in his life are, but is this not a sign that Rudy is at the moral center of the show? Does this not take away from the fact that a lot of his behavior is normalized?
                                                  1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
So I think what I'm going to do is finish Mushoku Tensei and come back to this video. Because I need to work and sleep maybe at some point and he is trying to actually cite textual evidence for things that deserve a proper response.
                                                    1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
I appreciate that, unlike the Redo take, Geoff leaves the door open to other analysis. That's... somewhat helpful? ? eh
                                                      1. …in reply to @__MoBlack
                                                        he's still wrong
